The Amazon, commissioned in 1973, was the first of the eight Type 21 anti-submarine frigates built for the British Navy in the 1970s. All but the Amazon served extensively in the Falklands War, during which two were destroyed. The remaining six served well into the 1990s and were eventually transferred to the Pakistani Navy, with which they still serve. The design of these ships became a subject of controversy. They were a composite of steel and aluminum, with the lighter material being used extensively above the waterline. Aluminum is combustible, however, a drawback that became apparent after Argentine Exocet missiles struck British ships during the Falklands conflict. In addition, the relative weakness of aluminum led to the development of stress cracks in a number of the ships, requiring major hull modifications. I was the original purchaser of this kit, probably back in the late 1970s. I did open the bag to check out the parts years ago, so I've taken the time now to go through the kit and instructions thoroughly to ensure t are no missing pieces - everything is accounted for. I initially thought parts 25 and 26 were missing, but oddly t are two locations for these parts on the sprue, although the parts only appear at one .
