Up for bid is a BEAUTIFUL and EXCEPTIONALLY RARE Meteor Air Transport - "MAT" - Flight Attendant/"Stewardess" Wing. Measuring approximately 2" in width and displaying the capital letters "MAT" sitting atop a golden globe detailing North and South America split by the Equator, the design and style of this EXPERTLY CRAFTED and VERY OLD wing harkens back to the days when flight attendants were called "stewardesses" (and were RN's to boot!), and Curtis-Wright R1820 Cyclones were the powerplants of choice!! There is no hallmark or other markings on the back of this wing; however, it appears to be made of metal covered by gold leaf or plating. Meteor Air Transport was a Curtis C-46 "Commando" and surplus/converted Douglas C-47 "Dakota" and DC-3 non-scheduled carrier that operated out of Teterboro, New Jersey from 1946 to 1958. While MAT primarily earned its keep by flying clothing to Detroit, MI, and auto parts back to New Jersey, it was also involved in passenger charter work. This is a GREAT WING from America's aviation past, and was worn at a time when a plethora of post-war start-up carriers were scrambling to buy whatever surplus transports the Army Air Corps was willing to sell, and biding their time until commercial airplane manufacturers - chiefly Douglas - could deliver bigger, better and faster machines.
