This is a 7 DAY AUCTION for a VERY RARE & EXTREMELY COLLECTIBLE Set of 4 Privately Minted Medals - From My Personal Collection This Privately Minted Medal Set Commemorates the Opening of the Al Zampa Memorial Bridge Which Spans the Carquinez Straights and Connects Vallejo, CA to Crockett, CA (Also Known as the Carquinez Bridge) Alfred Zampa was born in Selby, California, in 1905 - just a few miles down river from where this bridge is built. He was an ironworker who worked on a number of the San Francisco Bay Area bridges, including the Golden Gate Bridge, the Oakland Bay Bridge, the original 1927 Carquinez span and the second 1958 Carquinez span. He lived to be 95 years old and was present during the 2000 ground breaking ceremony of the bridge that was eventually dedicated to him (and the men and woman who risk their lives to build these great bridges.) Robinson, and Al Zampa and the Bay Area Bridges (2005) by John V. Robinson. The bridge was dedicated on November 8, 2003 and opened for traffic on November 11. (Originally, the plan was to dedicate the bridge on November 15). Complications arose when just-recalled Governor Gray Davis would have to transfer power to Arnold Schwarzenegger, which resulted in the date being moved. The original medals minted to commemorate the event have the old date (Nov. 15, 2003) on them, ===> which turned out to be wrong! <=== In 2003 These Medals Sets Had Limited Mintage of Only 200 Sets and Sold Out in Record Time!
