Description: Striking and hightly detailed copper engraved map depicting northeast Russia and the northwest portion of modern-day Canada and the United States with revisions of the northwest coast of America and of the Aleutian islands. Labels the Bering Sea as Mer d'Anadir. Shows northern California as Nouv. Albion , "decouverte en 1578 par Francois Drake." Shows the "R. de l'Ouest" running from Lake Winnipeg or "L. Winipigue" to the Pacific Ocean. Includes the routes of explorers , Captain Vitus Bering and Aleksei Chirikov or "Tschirikow" through Siberia and across the North Pacific Ocean to North America , including Alaska. Shows the interior of northwest North America as mainly blank. This map has been republished in the Santini's Atlas. Mapmaker: Paolo Santini ( 1729 Venice - Belluno 1793) was a priest of the church of Santa Maria Formosa in Venice and professor of drawing at the public schools of the Jesuits. From the best papers from the time he realized his brother Francis, the famous Universal Atlas , divided into two volumes and contains 123 cards. Francesco Santini he published between 1776 and 1780. Subsequently, the branches etching of the cards were purchased in 1781 from the press Remondini Bassano reissued the atlas . Cartographers: Gerhard Friedrich Muller was a German scientist and a member of the Second Kamchatka Expedition led by Russian captains and explorers, Vitus Bering and Alexei Chirikov in 1741. Hayes writes that Muller created this map in 1754 based on the information he had from Bering's and Chirikov's expeditions (Hayes, 104). Goss too, writes that Muller was the map's original creator, quoting Muller as stating that in this map he intended only to "connect together, according to probability, the coasts that had been separated in various places" (Goss, 142). Portinaro and Knirsch, however, write that the original author of the 1754 map is unknown and that Muller merely published the map in 1758 as "Nouvelle Carte des Descouvertes Faites par des Vaissaux Russes." Whether or not Muller was the original creator or first publisher (or both), the map became one of the best-known works representing the Alaska coastline and the northwest coast of North America, including the River of the West linking Lake Winnipeg to the Pacific Ocean (Goss, 142; Hayes, 104; Tooley, 453; Wagner, 343, entry 650; Wheat 224, no. 164). Unfortunately, the map does not accurately depict the coastline or the Aleutian Islands. Rather, it seems that Muller was a bit confused by the Aleutian Islands chain, resulting in a drawing of the mainland peninsula of America "jutting hundreds of miles into the North Pacific" (Hayes, 104). Muller's map was copied and republished by many other publishers and cartographers, including in this particular instance, English printseller and mapseller, Robert Sayer. This particular version is a revised edition of the original 1758 map and shows changes made to the northwest coast of America and the Aleutian Islands.Alaska was first discovered and mapped by Russian explorers in the eighteenth century. Peter the Great sent out his Danish captain, Vitus Bering in 1728. Bering left from Kamchatka Peninsula and heading east but had little luck in finding land in America.
