Alba gramophones were manufactured by A J Balcombe Ltd, and Alba is now the only English gramophone brand still in existence. You can buy a new Alba CD player, but you cannot buy an HMV, Columbia or Decca. They have all gone. The Model 555 is a portable of generous proportions and good quality, measuring approximately 17x12x7 inches when closed. It dates from the early 1930's. The second picture shows the gramophone in use at a local classic car meet, where it attracted a lot of interest but was not then for sale. Cosmetically the gramophone is in excellent original unrestored condition, just as the serious collector likes to find them. The dark blue case covering, which I think is imitation sharkskin, is free of tears, repairs, lifting or shrinkage. It has the Alba name embossed on the top of the lid, but this is difficult to reproduce in a photograph. The interior is near mint, with particularly fine plated fittings and an unblemished turntable cloth. The Garrard motor was professionally serviced and fitted with a new mainspring in 2005. The invoice for this work is included in the sale. PLEASE NOTE THAT I DO NOT POST OUTSIDE THE UK.
