Albert Einstein (1879-1955) was a German-born theoretical physicist who is widely regarded as the greatest scientist of the 20th century. He proposed the theory of relativity and also made major contributions to the development of quantum mechanics, statistical mechanics and cosmology. He was awarded the 1921 Nobel Prize for Physics. After his general theory of relativity was formulated, Einstein became world-famous, an unusual achievement for a scientist. Later, he became active in the cause of international disarmament. His writings include Relativity: The Special and General Theory (1916); The World as I See It (1934); and The Evolution of Physics (1938).
