Alexander Gardner: Battlefield Pass Signed by Winfield Scott Referencing Mathew Brady and Timothy O'Sullivan. 7.5" x 7" printed and manuscript document, "Head Quarters of the Army, Washington, Sept. 19, 1861", signed by Winfield Scott and E. D. Townsend, inscribed, in full, "Alexander Gardner, of Brady's establishment, and his two assistants, T. H. O'Sullivan and J. Coonily will be permitted to pass and repass within the United State's lines to make photographs of the camps & c. until further orders, and are commended to the courtesy of the troops." Mounted to an old parchment document. Scott was familiar with both Gardner and Brady, having visited the Brady Galleries numerous times over the previous decade.
