Lankes Description Limited Edition 1925 Fowler Woodcut Annual First Edition Published by Alfred Fowler Publication Date 1925 Hardcover with Dust Jacket 54 pages B/W Prints by Woodcut Artists 9-3/4 x 12-3/4 inches The Woodcut Annual for 1925 was published in a Limited Edition of 600 copies by Kansas City resident Alfred Fowler, a champion of American woodcuts and woodcut artists during the 1920s to the 1940s. This rare book features a portfolio of seven contemporary letterpress woodcuts including a J.J. Lankes print called Tranquillity House. The woodcut which was cut by Lankes in July 1924, was commissioned by Fowler who paid $40 for it. It measures 3-1/4 x 4 inches. The woodcuts are printed on both sides of the sheet. They may be reproductions, but it isn’t stated. All are very well printed. The frontispiece to the Annual is a reduced color engraving reproduction of Flying Island a color woodblock print by Canadian artist Walter J. Phillips. Also included are woodcut prints by Rudolph Ruzicka and a Ruzicka article on wood engraving and woodcuts. T are also additional articles and book reviews.
