AlicePauline Schafer (1899 - 1980) Cock a Shell , ca. 1975 Original Pencil Signed Color Linoleum Cut,Proof This charming original color linocut on Hosho Japanese hand-made paper of a rooster was executed by the American artist Alice Pauline Schafer. It is signed in pencil by the artist on the lower right, titled in pencil on the lower left, and annotated “Proof” on the lower left margin. It is matted. The image measures 14 ½ X 16 7/8 inches, with the paper measuring 16 ½ X 19 ¾ inches, and the mat measuring 20 X 24 inches. It is an excellent impression with vivid color, in excellent condition. It is not laid down, nor has any foxing, tears, or creases. Estimate $175-350. NO RESERVE. Alice Pauline Schafer was born in Albany, New York in 1899, and studied at the Albany Academy for Girls; and the Albany School of Fine Arts. A registrar at the Albany Institute of History and Art in New York, Alice Schafer was known for her printmaking skills. Her commissions were primarily in Albany where she was active in the Print Club. She was also a member of the National Association of Women Artists.
