This charming little cabinet sized china head doll is quite special and has a history. She was previously owned by both my German maternal great grandmother and grandmother. My great grandmother was born in Dresden Germany 1901 and was first given the doll as a Christmas gift as a little girl when she was 6 years old in 1907 (However, we do know that this doll is actually much older than this with her "flat top" hairstyle and could have already been in the family for longer. She was most likely originally made in the 1870's at the German factories that produced china head dolls). She later gave this doll to her own daughter (my grandmother) who had the doll with her at age 9 during the bombing raid on the city of Dresden in the final months of WWII. She and this little doll miraculously survived safely in an underground shelter while approximately 25,000 city residents were killed and the city, which was once one of the great cultural centers of Europe was reduced to ruins. The doll remained with her when she later moved to the United States and for the rest of her life afterwards. She died this February. The doll was named " Klara ". The doll still retains her original sawdust filled body and all original clothing and undergarments. She has her original limbs as well. Her china shoulder plate is fully intact underneath her clothing. read more
