In the summer of 1981, I was a Teaching Assistant in Allen Ginsberg's course--XX Century Expansive Poetry & Heroic Precursors--at the Jack Kerouac School for Disembodied Poetics at Naropa Institute in Boulder, Colorado, for which this anthology was compiled as a course text. Allen explains his vision and scope for the volume in his introduction (his signature is a copy). But, in short, this anthology gives a broad outline of the poetic tradition in which he placed the Beats and himself. It is an important document in that it provides insight into the literary aesthetics of the poets with whom Allen most identified and associated his own poetic sensibility. It should not come as a surprise that Allen Ginsberg was such an extraordinary teacher and scholar. This compilation gives a substantial sense of how he defined himself. It IS heroic to say the least. This anthology was printed in an edition of fifty copies of which this is #24/50. It is comprised of xeroxed copies of selected poems. It is presented in a loose-leaf binder with the idea that other poets and poems could be added as deemed appropriate. This is the original binder and is in excellent condition. There are 277 pages; most are printed on both sides. The first two pages and last page have torn punch holes; otherwise the rest of the text is sound. The binder is in very good read more
