This is the very rare 4:30 am POSTSCRIPT edition . This newspaper contains 4 pages (out of 8) with black bordered "mourning rules" in their columns showing the assassination atttempt on the life of a famous person (in this case it was President ABRAHAM LINCOLN). This has prominent bold inside page headlines: "HIGHLY IMPORTANT / The President Shot !" with 3 columns of "breaking news first report" of the ASSASSINATION of PRESIDENT ABRAHAM LINCOLN at Ford's Theater in Washington, DC on the night of April 14, 1865. There are 11 dispatches from the Tribune's news reporters covering the assassination of Lincoln, one of which reports (in error) that Lincoln had died at 11:45 PM on April 14 (he had NOT ). In addition there are prominent headlines on the back page: "POSTSCRIPT / 4:30 O'clock am/ LATEST / The President Just Alive at 3am / OFFICIAL ACCOUNT" with 4 more dispatches with detailed coverage of the ASSASSINATION of LINCOLN. This 4:30 am edition of the NY Tribune is exceedingly rare as most of the NY Tribunes of April 15, 1865 did NOT have the 3 column POSTSCRIPT EXTRA on the back page with further news of the ASSASSINATIOn of LINCOLN. This issue is also quite rare in that it did not announce the actual DEATH of LINCOLN (although it did contain a short false report that Lincoln had expired at 11:45 PM on April 14 (he did NOT). After being in a coma for nine hours, Lincoln died at 7:22 am on April 15. All in all this is one of the rarest NY Tribune issues (4:30 am) with long and detailed first news of LINCOLN's ASSASSINATION but not confirming that he had died !! Good condition. This issue would be in VG condition were it not for the light water staining as seen in the photos above. If this was in VG condition without the water stain it would retail in the $1,500 range. The assassination of United States President Abraham Lincoln took place on Good Friday , April 14, 1865, as the American Civil War was drawing to a close. The assassination occurred five days after the commander of the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia , General Robert E. Lee , surrendered to Lieutenant General Ulysses S. Grant and the Union Army of the Potomac . Lincoln was the first American president to be assassinated, though an unsuccessful attempt had been made on Andrew Jackson 30 years before in 1835. The assassination was planned and carried out by the well-known stage actor John Wilkes Booth , as part of a larger conspiracy in a bid to revive the Confederate cause. Booth's co-conspirators were Lewis Powell and David Herold , who were assigned to kill Secretary of State William H. Seward , and George Atzerodt who was to kill Vice President Andrew Johnson . By simultaneously eliminating the top three people in the administration, Booth and his co-conspirators hoped to sever the continuity of the United States government. Lincoln was shot while watching the play Our American Cousin with his wife Mary Todd Lincoln at Ford's Theatre in Washington, D.C. on the night of April 14, 1865. He died early the next morning. The rest of the conspirators' plot failed; Powell only managed to wound Seward, while Atzerodt, Johnson's would-be assassin, lost his nerve and fled Washington.
