AMAZING LEAF FROM A BOOK OF HOURS . Medieval Manuscript , in Latin , on Vellum - Paris , ca. 1480-90 , circle of Master Jacques de Besançon . September calendar leaf Iluminated miniatures of : The miniatures show the labor of the month and the zodiacal sign . The style is typical of manuscript illumination in Paris from the last two decades of the 15th century. The Master of Jacques de Besançon belongs to the pivotal artists in Paris . As the successor of the famous Maitre François, whose workshop he continued, he served many aristocratic persons and even rulers of his time in France and England . His work follows the traditional principles of illuminating, hardly influenced by the 'modern' standards of three dimensionality, Renaissance architecture, fashion and Flemish borders. By continuing his predecessor's concepts, he created a superb and vast oeuvre of embellished illumination. ( recto ) - Large illuminated initials + 2 decorated initials in red, blue, white and gold . ( verso ) - In the margins is a very nice decoration with floral ornaments in burnished gold + 2 decorated initials in red, blue, white and gold . The text is in a neat gothic bookhand in brown , red , blue and gold ink . Light burnishing on the external edge .Small hole from bug. In good condition. Leaf size : 183 x 127 mm.
