In the 70's, Ray Reardon won 6 World titles, a feat replicated by Steve Davis in the 80's, then followed by Stephen Hendry's 7 World Titles in the 90's. But what are the stories behind these great players? What made them so dominant and who influenced them? This DVD contains 3 fascinating documentaries detailing their rise to fame and fortune; 3 biographies of these legends of the green baize. Program 1 - Stephen Hendry; Doing the Business This amazing documentary follows Stephen Hendry 'behind the scenes' as he attempts to win his first major ranking title (the Rothmans Grand Prix in 1987). Includes interviews with his friends, family and manager Ian Doyle and includes many great photographs and snippets of film of Hendy as a youngster on his way to stardom. (Approx running time: 50mins) Program 2 - Steve Davis; Pot of Gold Another great documentary of the legend that is Steve Davis. It follows a year in the life of Davis starting with his capture of the 1984 World crown and ending soon after his memorable defeat the following year by Dennis Taylor. More interviews with friends, family, his manager Barry Hearn and Steve's most loyal followers, the famous 'Romford Roar', this program also tells of Davis's rise to the top from a painfully shy teenager through to World Champion. (Approx running time 50mins) Program 3 - Ray Reardon; Sporting Greats In this program the 70's legend Ray Readon opens up to interviewer Eamonn Holmes in which he recalls every aspect of his life both on and off the snooker table. He regals us with stories from his childhood and his early working days as a miner and a policeman. He takes us through his decision to turn professional and what the early days of the modern professional snooker circuit was life. In between the stories with have great clips of Reardon playing and winning titles. A rare interview with the great man. (Approx running time 30mins) Disc 2 At the peak of its popularity in the 1980's snooker was everywhere on TV. Such was its popularity many a TV show was 'customised' for snooker (a bit similar to these days when they make a 'Celebrity' special of popular TV shows like Come Dine With Me or Cash In The Attic etc). On this DVD you'll find 3 such shows from the 1980's. Program 1 - In At The Deep End In At The Deep End was a show in the 80's featuring former 'That's Life' presenter Chris Searle's attempts to take on a series of professions such as being a skipper on a boat or an autioneer at an auction house. This episode follows his attempts to become a professional snooker player. He'd never picked up a cue in his life and is guided in his efforts by Jack Karneham over a 6 month period. It follows his ups and downs including an ill fated attempt at the English Amateur Snooker Championships and concludes with a doubles match where he partners Steve Davis in a two frame match against Tony Meo and Alex Higgins in front of 1000 people. Other famous contributers include David Vine, Terry Griffiths, Cliff Thorburn and of course Barry Hearn. (Approx running time: 50 mins) Program 2 - QED; Riddles of Ball & Cue QED was a very popular program in the 80's and focused mainly on putting a scientific bent on everyday things, in a kind of 'how does that work?' angle. In this particular episode Steve Davis enlists the help of a scientist to get to the bottom of snooker based problems. These include: the problems caused by the nap of the cloth; what causes a 'kick'; working out 'plants' and sighting the correct angle for a pot.
