American Buffalo, Indian Head Round1oz .999 Silver Medallion - UncirculatedThe American Buffalo, 1oz .999 Silver Medallion, features a rendition of James Earle Fraser's acclaimed "Buffalo Nickel" design of an American Indian in profile on the obverse.The American buffalo is on the reverse.Fraser was born in Winona, Minnesota and was exposed to frontier life, giving him memories that he expresses in many of his works. Among those works which were influenced by his experiences on the frontier is the Indian Head (Buffalo) nickel. The Buffalo nickel was a copper-nickel five-cent piece that was struck by the United States Mint from 1913-1938. President Taft's administration officials had decided to replace the earlier version of the nickel and were impressed by Fraser's designs showing a Native American and an American bison. The first coins distributed were given out during the groundbreaking ceremonies for the National American Indian Memorial at Fort Wadsworth, Staten Island, New York on February 22, 1913.The Mints have produced a couple variations of the Buffalo Rounds.
