Rare American Federal Period Black and Gilt Painted Eagle Wall Shelf Late 18th to Early 19th Century, Original Paint over PineItem # 120010UPW02 This early work of Americana is a rare and special find. The crouched eagle looks out from his rocky outcrop, wings just slightly furled to lift a flat shelf as his head is cocked, wary and alert. His gilt highlighted sharp talons grasp the rocks firmly, each detailed even down to the nails and smaller stones, these stacked over two smaller shells flanking a large ribbed conch shell. Around the rim of the shelf, an infinity-motif flows from one side to the other, the top of the shelf black painted and heavily distressed and dirty. The painted surfaces appear to be fully original without inpainting or refinishing. One very large hand forged screw holds the shelf to the eagle, fully original and with slight weakness between the two; two iron brackets at the back of the shelf are used to secure the shelf to the wall, only one being fully original and hand forged with original screws.
