When I originally acquired this grouping I had no idea what it was or who it belonged to. Since then I have researched the items and now have what I believe to be a probable identification. The French-made overseas cap has a brass “26” on one side and a “ US ” on the other. Coupled with the accompanying copy of the “Friends of France-The Field Service of the American Ambulance described by its members”, I believe the “26” refers to the American Field Service S.S.U. 26. The roster for S.S.U. 26 ( http://net./~rdh7/wwi/memoir/AFShist/rosters/SSU26.htm ) shows only one member who was subsequently commissioned as a 2LT of Ordnance, This was Samuel L Shober Jr. of Philadelphia and notes that he was awarded the Croix d’ Guerre. Research shows that Lieutenant Shober was from a prominent Philadelphia family that dates to the pre-revolutionary period. He was 19 or 20 at the time of his service in the American Field Service in France . In addition to the cap, the grouping includes the two photos of the Lieutenant (one unfortunately has pieces broken off), Ordnance officer and US collar insignia and 2 nd Lieutenant bars and a Croix d’ Guerre and Victory medal with “France” bar both mounted on a single pin bar. Again this is all pure supposition but given the lack of actual identification I think it makes the grouping all that more interesting. read more
