Offering an unusual 'set' from the 1952 - 1954 Gilbert era. The catalogs depicts the "Yard King" work train set with an 0-8-0 No. 343 Steam switcher heading these four premium cars. Of special interest here is that a nice 326 NYC Hudson is at the point instead! As far as we can tell this is an original set that was purchased 'as is' which decrys "Why?" In all likelihood, the original transaction was altered either by the retailer or the customer. Not everyone liked the unusual little Yard Goat switcher so someone may have asked for/offered a replacement for it . Eager to make a sale, a dealer probably was accommodating. This set was acquired several years ago along with some Lionel trains and sat up for several years. It has been played with and was purchased in 'dirty' condition. I gave it a superficial exterior cleaning but it should be gone through more thoroughly - especially the locomotive.The track and No. 1 1/2 50 watt transformer was with it in the box it came in. There are only 10 curves, 1 straight, a lock-on,and a manual uncoupler. The above is strictly conjecture on my part but seems the likely scenario. There were no other items in the acquisition, just what we have here.
