______ s u b j e c t i v e g a l l e r y ______ ________________________________ Haitian Impressionist Landscape with Women~ Loran Frederick Wilford ~ Florida Artist / Circa 1930's - 1940's ~ please scroll down for more photos ~ SIZE: Painting (image) - 12.5" x 21"Frame - 23" x 29.5" DESCRIPTION:Very fine gouache and watercolor painting of Haitian women, one with a basket of flowers, at a lagoon in Haiti, by well-known American - Florida artist, Loran Frederick Wilford (1892 - 1972).Gouache and watercolor on artist's paper. Matted and framed.Signed by the artist, lower left, "Wilford"Titled "Haitian Waters", priced and with the artist's Florida address on the back board (see photos).Loran Wilford was known as a Florida artist as he taught and worked there for many years. He made many paintings of Florida and the Islands of the Caribbean, including Haiti, and this example is one of his finest. The colors, subject matter, composition and brushwork are all top quality and it is easy to see why Loran Wilford was so highly thought of and took part in so many major exhibitions in the United States.This painting is not one of his illustrations made for publication, but was probably sold in a gallery since it has a price on the back. It is large and impressive and beautiful to look at. There are many scenes painted in the Haitian folk art - primitive or naive style by Haitian artists, but Impressionist views by American artists are not common. AGE: Circa 1930's - 1940's. CONDITION:Excellent condition, as shown in the photos and with the following noted: No damage or restoration to the painting - it is in perfect condition. The painting is not laid down and is lightly taped to the matte from the back. The matte has a light water stain at the edge, lower right (this could be covered with a new over-matte to make the piece double-matted). The white wood frame is probably original and shows wear overall. Loran Frederick Wilford (1893 - 1972) Loran Wilford was born in Wamego, Kansas on September 13, 1892. Painter, Illustrator, and Art Teacher. He studied at Kansas City Art Institute and with Charles Wilimovsky and George Pearse Ennis. Wilford worked in the art department of the Kansas City Star in 1917 and lived in Kansas City from 1917 to 1923. He moved east to Stamford, Connecticut where he lived until 1953, working for New York City publications such as Cosmopolitan, McCall’s, and Hearst’s International. He illustrated several children's books that were written by Mabel Harmer during the 1950s. However, Wilford also spent much of his time in Florida and taught at the Ringling School of Art, in Sarasota, from 1936 to 1943 and 1948-69. Loran Frederick Wilford died in Sarasota, Florida on December 5, 1972.
