AMERICAN SAMPLER.Evelina S. Gilman, probably Maine, early 19th century, silk on linen. Sets of alphabets above floral basket flanked by large birds perched on tiered trees, all on a rolling lawn scattered with flowers. Signed "Evelina S. Gilman her sampler wrought in her 12th year". Good colors. Framed, 16"h. 17"w.Research located Evelina A. Gilman, born in 1825, the youngest of nine children born to Enoch and Olive Gilman of Jackson, Waldo County, Maine. See Pook & Pook, September 20, 2003, lot 93, for very similar Maine sampler.Condition: Colors are brighter then what appears in the printed paper catalog. The middle initial "S" in her name is work in a different shade of brown. The birds, rolling lawn with the scattered flowers, the 2nd set of alphabets and over all composition are quite similar to Sophronia Robinson's Maine sampler, also undated. Sampler edges visible in frame and measure 12 1/2"h. 12"w.
