The Amsler Type 6 planimeter is the same as the Type 4 with the addition of two upward-facing points on the top. The points are for use measuring the mean height of steam engine indicator diagrams. This Type 6 is marked "Stanley. Great Turnstile. Holborn. London. Agent", which means it was made after 1875 when Stanley acquired the distribution rights for Amsler planimeters in the UK. There is no "J. Amsler" mark on it, so it is before 1914.This Type 6 is in fair condition, with some corrosion on the tracing wheel and worm gear. This planimeter is from the collection of Robert K. ("Bob") Otnes, PhD, one of the founding members of the Oughtred Society and the original editor of the Journal of the Oughtred Society. It is being sold by the Oughtred Society on behalf of the estate of Robert K. Otnes. The Oughtred Society was founded in 1991 by a group of slide rule collectors and is dedicated to the preservation and history of slide rules and other calculating instruments.
