In the 1850's and up to the 1900's the anchor and chain on pottery was seen as a symbol of firm faith in salvation and steadfastness. is a nice 6 1/2 inch, Bennington or Rockingham pitcher with an anchor and chain on either side. This pitcher is from my grandmothers old farm in Saco, Maine and has been in my possession since the 1950's. I remember she used it for maple syrup that was so much thicker in the day as I recall.Lots of potters made the mottled brown we now call Bennington or Rockingham in the New Hampshire area. This has no markings. It is glazed in and out as well as on the foot. Nary a chip or a crack. This is just about the end of Gram's collection. I am 72 and time to pass these little treasures on and buy some more oil. Thank you for lookin' in and please check our feedbacks.
