Ancient Apache Indian Water Jug c. 1800's This item is being offered for auction, from a private collector who wishes to liquidate their holdings in numerous items of North American Indian collectibles and artifacts. This is the next, of many items that will be offered over the next few months. Up for your consideration for auction is this Ancient Indian Water Jug, believed to be Apache Indian in origin. This extraordinary, museum quality example of Indian craft appears to be made of shaved willow, covered with pine tar. Originally purchased in the early 1980's from a west coast artifact shop. T is not much known about this piece other than what the original descriptive tag tells us (see photo), which appears ancient itself. Dimensions: 7 3/4" across at the base by 6 3/4" tall. Condition: This ancient water jug is in very good condition for its assumed age. The underlying willow weave appears to be loose to allow the penetration and saturation of the pine tar. The pine tar coating the weave is cracked from many years of age. It is believed that the original woven horsehair handles were replaced with hemp, after the original handles disintegrated from use.
