Late Shang Dynasty 1200 BC--1045 BC Original &Authentic with English Translation! A gentleman always carried a jade pendant, as a symbol of class and to remind him the virtues of a gentleman, since those virtues were found in jade . —Confucius This is another Chinese ritual jade Amulet from my personal collection! It is an ancient Chinese Amulet/Pendant is in the shape of a Wine Cicada insect that was meant to symbolize Heaven and everlasting life. It is made of pure Nephrite Jade that still retains its natural green color. It has a single, tiny hole that has been drilled in the top of the Amulet so it could be suspended from a cord around the neck. It is estimated to have been made during the late Shang Dynasty (1200 BC to 1045 BC) of ancient China! It measures approximately 2.7” tall x 1.6” wide x .63" deep and weighs about 77 grams or 2.7 ozs. This jade amulet has a fantastic color & natural patina that is SPECTACULAR! Experts have estimated that this small amulet/pendant dates to approximately the ancient late Shang Dynasty in ancient China circa 3,000 years ago! This is a Museum Quality, ancient Chinese amulet/pendant! I Guarantee it authentic or your money back. In ancient China, this ritual amulet/pendant would likely have been a ritual sacrifice to the gods. It would have be placed in the tomb or temple of the departed by his family to protect him or her from evil spirits in this life and in the afterlife. It would also show the spirits that he/she was a wealthy and honorable person. Jade was highly prized by these early civilizations in China and it was thought to have positive energy to drive away evil spirits and bring good luck and fortune to all who wore a piece on their person--in life and in death. Incredible!! TRANSLATION This super Wine Amulet also has several ancient Chinese characters incised into the front, back, and bottom. These characters are in a script called "Ku-wen" or "Lesser Seal Characters" and are the earliest form of the Chinese written word. Here is my best translation of these characters: The very top of the front side (see photos # 1-2) states this is a ritual offering in August: "To Rule in the 8th Moon (or Month--which is August). The characters on the back side (see photos # 3-4) state the amount of the ritual offering of wine: "To partake (or divide) the amount of 10 inches of Wine." On the bottom of the wine amulet (see photo # 5) is a small "o" the character for "Sun" surrounded by two curved lines. This compound character is tougher for me to translate, but I believe it could be translated as "Sun Water," which is perhaps a synomym for wine, as the sun ripens the grapes to make the wine. DETAILS: It is made of Nephrite jade and has a wonderful, authentic, warm patina. The jade still retains nearly all of its original green color. It appears to have been cleaned at some time, as the bottom half is very shiny and free of mineral deposits. The weathering changes and pitting on the top half are consistant with buried jade and other period pieces. It is simple yet a stunning example of ancient Chinese craftmanship. In ancient China, gifts to the gods and to one's ancestors were thought to influence daily events on Earth. This tiny Wine Amulet was likely made to include in the tomb or temple of a noble as the ancient Chinese believed that he or she would need this amulet to safely transition from this world to the afterlife. There is an encised line on the top of the wine vessel amulet with short verticle lines that is meant to symbolize the top surface of the liquid wine.
