"Coptics and Coffins" The word Copt is derived from the Greek word Aigyptos(Egypt), which was, in turn, derived from "Hikaptah", one of the names for Memphis, the first capital of Ancient Egypt. The modern use of the term "Coptic" describes Egyptian Christians, as well as the last stage of the ancient Egyptian language script. Also, it describes the distinctive art and architecture that developed as an early expression of the new faith. The Coptic Church is based on the teachings of Saint Mark who brought Christianity to Egypt during the reign of the Roman emperor Nero in the first century, a dozen of years after the Lord's ascension. He was one of the four evangelists and the one who wrote the oldest canonical gospel. Christianity spread throughout Egypt within half a century of Saint Mark's arrival in Alexandria as is clear from the New Testament writings found in Bahnasa, in Middle Egypt, which date around the year 200 A.D., and a fragment of the Gospel of Saint John, written using the Coptic language Egypt and can be dated to the first half of the second century. Coffins were the most important funerary item acquired by the ancient Egyptians, whether for royalty, elites or whomever could afford one. It's purpose from the earliest times was the protection of the body and to preserve it from deterioration or mutilation. A stone sarcophagus was also usually provided to the elite hold and futther protect the coffin in the tomb. Coffins and coffin walls were decorated from a very early date. Every area that had massive mortuary temples and burial sites such as Thebes , developed their own very distinctive styles in coffin manufacturing. They were mainly decorated on the exterior sides and have freely depicted representations of human figures. Royal "Court Coffins" were adorned with bands of the hieroglyphs, some simple while others were embellished with gold leaf. Those of lower status were buried in single coffins without benefit of a secondary casings or a sarcophagus. They were usually made from cheap materials such as pottery or reeds. Nested coffins consisting of up to four coffins were restricted to the middle and upper class burials.
