An ancient Greek bronze hemilitron coin from Himera, Sicily. Struck 420 - 408 B.C. The obverse depicts the city of Himera, personified as a Nymph, facing left. The reverse with six pellets within a laurel wreath. Himera was an important Greek colony located on the northern coast of modern-day Sicily. After passing under the rule of the tyrant Theron, the Himerans defeated the Carthagians in the Battle of Himera, against superior numbers. However in 408 BC the city was eventually destroyed by the Carthagians in the course of their Sicilian expedition. This coin dates to the final period of Himeran independence, before its total destruction. Diameter: 20 mm. Weight: 3.80 g. Provenance: Ex.
