ANCIENT GREEK COINLarissa, ThessalyThe Thessalian League was a loose union of city-states and tribes in what is now northern Greece. In antiquity, its capital was the city of Larissa, which survives as the largest city in the Thessaly region of modern-day Greece. The Thessaly region was known as Aeolia in ancient times. It was run by a few aristocratic families starting around 1000 BC. Located on fertile plains, the Thessaly region was renown for it's horse breeding. The Thessalonian cavalry was renown in ancient times as it served in the Macedonian military. The region's strength and influence in Greek affairs waxed and waned through the centuries into the Roman Imperial period. After that, it suffered centuries of successive conquests by Slavs, Avars, Arabs, Bulgarians, and Ottomans. After the Greek War of Independence, Thessaly became part of the modern Greek state in 1881.In Greek mythology, Larissa was a local nymph from the Thessaly region. Two cities in Thessaly derived their names from Larissa, meaning "the citadel". Many coins from this region were minted depicting Larissa from about 400 BC until about 320 BC. She was either depicted with her flowing locks behind her or tied up on the top of her head. Sometimes she was depicted sitting next to a spring confirming her designation as a nymph.
