A hugely desirable and collectable ancient Roman solid gold aureus minted under Emperor Vespasian, ( Titus Flavius Caesar Vespasianus Augustus ). Struck in 72 AD at the Rome mint.The obverse with the bust of Vespasian, shown facing right and wearing laurel wreath. The legend reading:IMP[erator] CAESAR VESPASIANVS AVG[vstvs] TR[ibvnicia] P[otestas]"Emperor Caesar Vespasianus, Augustus, Tribune of the People"The reverse with the Roman personification of good fortune, Fortuna. She is shown standing, facing left, wearing loose drapery and cradling cornucopia in her left hand while she rests her right on the prow of a ship. The legend reading:COS III FORT[vna] RED[vx]"Three times Consul, Fortunes returned!"The aureus was the most valuable coin minted by the Roman Empire. Struck from virtually pure metal, as evidenced by their rich colour, these coins were as admired and prized in antiquity as today.
