Beautiful "Universum" Space Age chess set designed by Arthur Elliot (former Disney designer) for Anri, circa late 1950's, which very much echoes the work of Brancusi. The unusual pieces are made of alpine maple and black walnut. All the pieces, and the base of the storage box, have felt lined bottoms. When you unlatch the brass hasp and open the box you will find a removable wood tray that contains half of the pieces, each situated within its own divided custom crafted section, each made for the shape of each piece. Under the tray is the second half of the chess pieces. The bottom of the box mimics that of the tray with divided custom crafted sections for each piece. The chess pieces have names: Stazione Spaziale, Nave Spaziale, Satellite, Missile, Radar, and Razzo. The box is 11" x 7.75" x 3.5." The interior of the box has a small round paper label that reads, "ANRI SPACE AGE, Designed By Elliott." The set has been used and a few pieces, photographed together, show some wear.
