You are bidding on this carved and painted relief of St. Wilfred made from wood of the bell frame of the Hexham Abbey in England. The plaque on the carving indicates the wood is from the 15th century and was removed during the 1977 restoration of the Abbey. The relief then, was carved and painted sometime around or after 1977 but there is no signature or date that I can find. I purchased this piece at an estate sale in Richmond Virginia which included numerous art pieces from around the world. However, I cannot offer any provenance other than what is on the plaque. The dimension are 17'h x 10'w x 2.5'depth Below is some information on St Wilfrid and the Abbey: Hexham originated as a monastery founded by Saint Wilfrid in 674. The crypt of the original monastery survives, and incorporates many stones taken from nearby Roman ruins, probably Coria (Corbridge) or Hadrian's Wall. The current Hexham Abbey dates largely from the 11th century onward, but was significantly rebuilt in the 19th century. Other notable buildings in the town include the Moot Hall , the Shambles , and the Old Gaol .Hexham is dominated by Hexham Abbey . Originally the church of Hexham Priory, founded by Bishop Wilfrid in 674 A.D. The current church largely dates from c.1170–1250, in the Early English Gothic style of architecture.
