They're a traditional German Design, and were first brought into the country by the German settlers. Unlike a falling axe, hewing axes are a fine edged tool, that was used to create a finished product. They were the preferred tool for flattening the surface of round logs. The edge of the axe is worked down the log like a large chisel, and by using short accurate chops a skilled craftsman could flatten or square off the sides of a log, leaving a smooth finish. Wood beams were made by splitting the logs with a wedge, and the surfacing then took place with a hewing axe. The axes were made with handles offset in both the right, and left directions. The different offsets were used for hewing opposing sides of the log. Logs were typically worked on from the top toward the stump, and were often processed right where they fell. This axe is hand forged, and over 100 years old. read more
