This beautiful example of bleu de four was manufactured and decorated by the Limoges firm of Charles Field Haviland and is marked with the green whiteware mark used by the company ca. 1881-1900. During this period, the company was associated with another Limoges firm, Gerard, Dufraisseix and Morel and their initials "GDM" also appear in the whiteware mark. The plate also has the blue double circle decorating mark of "Ch Field Haviland Limoges" used by the company ca. 1859-1881. The combination of the two marks enables the year of manufacture to be narrowed down to 1881. The whiteware blank has a scalloped rim with a footed base and is made of the very translucent hard paste porcelain that the Limoges factories were famous for producing. The bleu de four pieces were created by a double fired process that was very costly which probably accounts for the scarcity of antique cobalt pieces. The cobalt color was applied under the glaze with the gold transfer decoration being applied over the glaze. The gold transfer flowers on this plate have a feathery appearance which allows the underlying cobalt color to show through. The decorator hand embellished the flower petals and the leaves with raised drops of very light blue enamel. The scalloped rim is trimmed with a 3/16" wide band of gold. The inner border of the cobalt is also trimmed with a line of gold. The plate has a large intricately formed golden medallion in the center of the plate. While very decorative, we've found ourselves wishing on more than one occasion that the center medallions had been left off these cobalt pieces as it's the first element to show wear. This plate measures 8-1/2" in diameter and stands about 7/8" tall at the rim. It's in excellent condition for a plate over 130 years old with no chips, nicks, cracks or hairlines. The gold center medallion shows some minimal wear as does the outer and inner gold borders, but really nothing distracting. The golden flowers show no wear and the raised enamel embellishment is almost fully intact with just a few dots worn in a few places, not really noticeable unless viewed under magnification.
