This is a very rare example of an antique needlepoint textile / fabric and one can even say that is of museum quality. A 53 x 68 inch needlepoint textile featuring the famous flame stitch that was popular at the courts in France & Italy. The textile is 18th/ 19th century (1750 to 1820) and made with wool threads and is in very good condition. At some point in its history it was backed with a linen material. It is quite seldom that one finds such a fine example of needlepoint of this age in such good condition. The condition may have to do with its provenance. In Switzerland in the 1930s to the 50s, it was very popular to collect antique fabrics and textiles and to frame them with fringe or another material and to use them in the home. Thankfully, this piece was edged with a fringe border and hung as decoration. Hence, it is really in very good condition.
