~ WONDERFUL CONDITION ~
~ NO RESERVE ~
Welcome to the month of October, and the fall season. Being offered for your consideration, with NO RESERVE , is this wonderful Antique Victorian Circa 1905 Theodore Haviland French Limoges Porcelain Hand Painted Oyster Plate.
The Limoges region of France is located two hundred miles south of the city of Paris. This area has been a leading producer of outstanding porcelain objects for many years due to the fact that the local soils are rich in feldspar and kaolin, two minerals necessary for hard paste porcelain production.
in the United States oysters have been enjoyed by diners for many years; history tell us that Southern chefs created recipes for "mock oysters" when shortages of the shell fish occurred during the Civil War.
This oyster plate carries the Mark 33 red full name overglaze mark with the printed word "FRANCE", a backstamp used by Theodore Haviland from 1903 until 1925. Theodore Haviland, a brother of Charles Edward, and son of David Haviland, left the family company in 1892 and formed his own business operating under the name Theodore Haviland.
Measuring 8 1/2" in diameter this beautiful oyster plate carries a hand painted rose flower bouquet floral design entwined within a spring green and gray textured border.
T are five outer wells surrounding a round center sauce well; each well is embellished with gold luster trim.
This five well oyster plate is in wonderful condition, free of any chips, cracks, flea bites, or repairs. I did notice a roughness on the inside of the lower base ring which can be seen in the photographs provided below.
This serving piece has come from a smoke free estate collection w it was stored appropriately to prevent damage to the hand painted porcelain.
