An amazing strong safe strong lock box measuring approximately 10 3/8 h x 15 w x 10 3/8 inches deep and weighing approximately 9.4 pounds. A very rare and solid piece with rusting and a few tiny holes with dents most notably on top. Hobbs became one of the founders of the lock making firm of Hobbs Hart & Co. Ltd. The company started in 1851 and was formally registered as Hobbs and Co. in 1852. But by 1855 it had become Hobbs, Ashley and Company. The name then changed to Hobbs, Ashley and Fortescue, with an address at 97 Cheapside in London. Then for the next ninety years the address was 76 Cheapside in London. Thanks for looking.Alfred Charles Hobbs was born on October 7th, 1812 in Boston. When Alfred was only three years old his farther died leaving the family destitute. Begining at the age of ten, A. C. Hobbs worked at a variety of jobs ranging from farm help to wood carving, carriage building, tinsmithing, and harness making. While an apprentice at the Sandwich Glass Company, he learned to make doorknobs and became interested in locks. For a while he was a partner in a small firm of Jones & Hobbs, lockmakers. About 1840 he became a salesman for the Day & Newwll Company - one of America's foremost lock makers. Here he earned a reputation as an expert lock picker.
