* NO RESERVE AUCTION * Antique Italian Pietra DuraHardstone Plaque Fine old Florentine Pietra Dura plaque dating to the late 19th or early 20th century and framed in a 1940s gold-leaf and hand-painted Italian frame.This plaque measures 9" x 10" including the frame, and 7.25" x 8.25" the hardstone plaque only.This plaque depicts a floral still life and the image consists of different hardstones and coral inlaid into black marble. The workmanship is of the highest quality and the craftsman who made this piece used a full range of different cut stones. The petals of the two flowers in the middle are made of Mediterreanean coral and the rest of the image is completed in many other natural colors of stone.This piece was made during the 1890s to 1920s, however it has been re-framed during the 1940s, as far as I can tell. When the backing (cloth-paper) is lifted, the remains of the original, earlier backing can be seen on the back of the plaque (see photos). The frame is also Italian and hand-made. It is decorated with authentic gold-leaf and hand-painted floral scrolls, contrasting and complimenting the striking black backgound and subtle colors of the hardstone plaque. The details are very fine and the workmanship of the highest quality. Both the plaque and the frame are in great condition. T is some very slight wear to the gilding on
