Antique cigar cutter from factory in Philadelphia, PA. Dates to mid-19th century. Functional construction has a well designed and efficient guillotine type cutter blade and stop, topped by nicely finished wooden knob handle. The cutter was used to cut cigars to the desired length; the center channel in the wooden base as a metal stop that can be set to the prescribed length. Numbered "ruler marks" are impressed on one side of the channel. The initials "I S" are incised on one side of the wooden base in cursive script. A really nice and complete early example of a US Civil War-era cigar cutter.
