This is a large early 19th century hat box or bandbox with a rare hot air balloon scene. It has a blue background with landscape, buildings, and hot air balloons in flight decoration. At the top of the box, towards the rim it reads "Clayton's Ascent". Richard Clayton flew his balloon a total of 350 miles from Cincinnati to Virginia in 1835. 10 1/2" high, 17 1/2" long, 12 1/2" wide. The inside bottom of the box is lined with a label - "BULKELEY DRY GOODS. MAIN AND TEMPLE STREETS, HARTFORD, - - CONN. CURTAINS. PAPER HANGINGS." The bottom is hand stitched on--like most vintage bandboxes. It is missing the lid and t are some small tears and stains. Please email with any questions.
