ANTIQUE 2L GERMAN BEER STEIN WITH MONKEYS, MONKEY HANDLE AND MONKEY FINIALExcellent condition15 1/2" H5" Diameter Base3 3/8" Diameter openingThis is an antique 2L German Beer Stein, mold 83/111, depicting monkeys and palm trees with a figural monkey handle and a monkey finial. Monkeys are considered a sign of drunkenness and often depicted on German steins. This is similar to a number of monkey themed steins made by Girmscheid, but this particular example has not been recorded in The Beer Stein Library. The stein measures 15 1/2" in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, hairlines or pewter damage. The phrase on the stein translates roughly to "It is better to remain with monkeys, cats, and bears than to constantly live in anxiety." Monkeys are a sign of drunkenness, while cats are a symbol for a hangover, and a bear is a symbol of how one feels while consuming alcohol.
