Antique Sterling Silver Shell Handle Muffin Butter or Serving Dish & Cover from Sheffield dated 1913 This Superb Antique Muffin, Butter or Serving Dish measures approximately 6 3/8 inches or 162 mm across from one handle to the other by just over 4 1/2 inches or 116 mm across the width or diameter of its lid rim and it stands 4 inches or 102tall to the top of the finial on its lid when in place. The dish and cover or lid are made from sterling silver and they have a total combined silver weight of 324,2 grams, the dish and cover are in a circular shape and the body has a wonderful raised relief shell shape handle on either side of its upper body, the lid has a faceted panel decoration under a delightfully shaped finial and the dish stands on a flat circular base, the dish has Not been engraved with a previous owners initials or family monogram all as photographed below and the dish and cover have both been impressed with matching English sterling silver hallmarks that read as follows, R & B - Crown - Lion Passant - stylized v R & B is the Sheffield silversmith or is the makers mark of Roberts & Belk Ltd, the Crown is the mark of the Sheffield assay office, the Lion Passant is the mark of English 925 standard sterling silver and the stylized letter v is the date letter for 1913. The condition is used and fairly good for its age. The Dish and cover have No Holes, No Splits, No Cracks and No Repairs that I can find, the dish stands straight, the cover or lid is a perfect fit, the definition and decoration is crisp, the silver hallmarks are still clearly legible although as this dish and cover is a used antique it does have some dents in its lid along with some extremely minor surface marks and wear from use, it has the patina of age that is to be expected and a gentle clean would enhance it greatly. Personally I think that this antique two handle dish and cover can still be used today on a dining table for butter, sauces, pickles or jams and that it would make a superb addition to any collection, I also think that it looks fantastic considering that it's 100 years old.
