This auction is for a vintage photo taken by J.P. Ball. In the bottom left corner of the photo it is marked "J.P. Ball 30 W. 4th St.". James Presley Ball was a prominent African American photographer, abolitionist and business man. Ball was born in 1825 and died in 1904. His photos are held in the collection of the Cincinnati Art Museum, the Cincinnati Museum Center and the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston. The back of the photo is signed "James Clarke Cincinnati May 25th / 62". The 1862 Cincinnati City Directory lists 3 men by the name "James Clarke". The seller believes, by looking at the information about the 3 men, that this man (because of his formal attire) could have worked for the S.H. Burten & Co., which was listed at 134 Longworth in Cincinnati. This photograph measures 2 1/2 inches in width and 4 inches in height. Please look for the seller's other vintage photos that are for sale. Study the picture carefully as there are no returns.
