This is an antique, hand carved, wooden, African Dogon sculpture of a Tellem style female figure with upraised arms depicting a woman praying for rain which was made by Dogon tribal people of Mali, Africa. The Tellem were the tribal people who inhabited the Bandiagara Escarpment in Mali between the eleventh and sixteenth centuries. The Dogon people migrated to the escarpment region around the 14th century. The Tellem people built dwellings around the base of the escarpment as well as directly into the cliff-face. Many of these structures are still visible in the area. Some Tellem buildings, most notably the granaries, are still in use by the Dogon people today. The Tellem people disappeared for unknown reasons but the strong influence from Tellum art is evident in Dogon art.Dogon sculptures are not made to be seen publicly, and are commonly hidden from the public eye within the houses of familiesor kept with the Hogon the spiritual leader in a Dogon village. The importance of secrecy is due to the symbolic meaning behind the pieces and the process by which they are made. This rare African Dogon wooden statue measures 21 inches tall by 5 inches wide and weighs 4 pounds and 3 ounces.Great condition with some wear and cracking to the wood. This specimen is very desirable and would make a fine addition to any African tribal art collection. read more
