We are pleased to offer a beautiful antique stoneware molasses jug, finished in dark brown Albany Slip glaze. It has a very unusual incised design at the top of the piece, which is rare since these pieces were not intended as works of art. It is marked Wm E Warner West Troy, which dates it to 1843 - 1859. Pottery makers across upstate New York turned out millions of pieces of utilitarian stoneware in the 19th century. It was not considered valuable and as such, was not preserved or well cared for. Much of it was finished in a dark brown glaze called Albany Slip. The glaze was high in mineral content which accounts for the variations in color - it can be almost black to lighter shades of brown. The firing process caused color variations as well. Many of the pieces show the fingerprints of the pottery who dipped the piece into the glaze before firing. We will be offering a number of these pieces in the coming weeks. They are great for accenting country or primitive decor. Please be sure to add us to your favorites list and check back often. Condition: Very good - no chips or cracks. It has been fitted for a lamp as seen in the photos - there is a small screw inserted at the bottom of the piece and as such, it will not hold water. Size: 8 3/4" tall; 7 3/4" diameter at the base. Shipping: Buyer to pay actual shipping costs; insurance read more
