~*~Hello and thank you for looking~*~ I don't normally collect anything other than textiles when I am in Europe, however this piece was purchased because of its association with textiles, I couldn't resist this lovely painting. Aubusson is a small town in central France. Aubusson is known was the heart of the french tapestry industry, since the 15 th century. Before a tapestry was woven, a painter ( known as the “peintre cartonnier”) would produce a sketch of the pattern . There was then the dyer of the wool who would dye the tones using the sketch as the guide and then the weaver of the tapestry. The quality of the tapestries were highly dependent on the skills of the painters and Aubusson employed some of the greatest painters of the time. Jean Honore Fragonard ( 1732-1806) worked in Aubusson in the 18 th century at a time when religious subjects were giving way of more idealized views of life and love. This wonderful painting is a gorgeous example of this process! ~ This painting is backed with a finely woven linen cotton fabric. It reads Aubusson in the reverse in the bottom right corner and Fragonard in reverse in the far left corner. There is writing on the back of this piece ( please see photographs 10, 11 and 12) This piece is numbered in the top right of the piece. It appears to have been perhaps signed by Fragonard and read more
