Wonderful bookends depicting a baseball pitcher in his windup. Titled, "The Last Inning" on the backs.Bronze-clad (or electro-formed), a manufacturing technique whereby a skin of bronze is made to adhere to a plaster form through the process of electro-plating. A handful of companies used this method in the early 1900s to make decorative household objects that had the look, feel and heft of solid bronze pieces yet still were affordable by the middle class. One of those companies was Pompeian Bronze, operating in NYC in the 1920's. No maker's mark (there would have been foil labels on the bottoms) but I have other, similar sports pieces that ARE marked Pompeian. Ca. 1920.Condition is great: no breaks in the cladding, nothing dented or bent; no mashed corners on the bases. "Lines" visible on sides are just light scratches, no cracks.Paint is original, shows some age appropriate wear and minor flaking but mostly is intact. Both pieces sit flat and stable.7 1/4 inches high; 4 3/4 inches wide; 3 inches deep. Combined weigh is just shy of 7 pounds.Perfect gift for the sports fan or major-leaguer in your family.
