~ Antique 19th Century Wooden Nutcracker BEAR with PIPE ~ Fresh from a local estate sale is this unusual carved wooden Black Forest nut cracker in the shape of a Bear smoking a pipe! He is sitting atop a carved podium or "tree" that acts as the cracker device. The piece stands on its own at 6.5 inches tall. T is a nice patina to the wood and the detail is wonderful. T are some old chips out of the base and his ear tips and the pipe bowl have some chipping but t are no breaks and it works fine. T is an old label on the bottom that says "A Lindustrie Suisse, MAURICE BLOCH, 14 Rue du Rhone 14, Geneve. T is another label below that which is written "Hhd. With a little sleuthing I discovered that Maurice Bloch was a Jewish merchant and artisan who made and sold tourist goods including cuckoo clocks in Geneva, Switzerland in the 1800's. His third child was ERNEST BLOCH (b. 1881) who became one of the great American classical composers of the 20th century. Maurice Bloch died in 1913. A little history to add to this wonderful utilitarian folk art! It is a super piece and will make a great addition to your collection.
