Antique Germany Lidded Stein - Das Gnomenfest Tall earthenware pewter-lidded stein with this mark on bottom: '10 Germany 1046.' 12" tall to peak of pointed lid. Pewter lid highly decorative. Stein is decorated all the way around in relief with gnomes/dwarfs in parade formation, carrying a barrel of beer with a tuba player in the lead. Appears to be handpainted. Very colorful. Large handle is also highly decorative - a branch with leaves and fruit. Lots of crazing. There are some white spots in the glazing on the gnnome scene - they seem to be chips on the glaze only and not into the pottery. There is an area of separation on the lid between the handle and the lid - see photos. On the bottom there is a large space - I have read that music boxes were sometimes added in this area. I am not an expert in beer steins, so please correct me if I have erred in nomenclature. There is a KB mark and a 1046 mark in the gnome scene. There is also a German verse on this piece that reads, 'Das Gnomenfest - Hier mach' halt, Du lieve Seele,' Which we think means, 'The gnome festival. Here stop, dear soul, and refresh both heart and throat.' Customer Promise Actual shipping cost only. No extra fees.
