ANTIQUE BISQUE POLAR BEAR PULLING SNOW BABY ON SLED Up for auction is a antique Snow Baby figurine. This Snow baby is an upright polar bear giving a baby a ride on a sled. The number 370 is incised on the back side of the sled. This figure measures 1.62” high. It is a combination no-snow baby and the traditional snow on the polar bear. The paint is not a bright red and it is faded. However it is in perfect condition for its age. Please note that before World War I some Snow Babies were made in both snowed and unsnowed versions. This happened more frequently after the war. Babies without grout were sometimes coated with either coralene or glitter snow. Some were left completely unsnowed, their suits either white or painted red. The inspiration for the red-suited babies has not been determined, but from about 1916 until at least the mid-1920s, the Whitney Company published Christmas post cards showing little babies dressed in red. These Nimble Nicks, as they were called are pictured both at play and hard at work making toys. They were believed to be a link between the babies and Santa’s elves? Nimble Nicks engaged in more varied activities than the sledding babies Ellen Clapsaddie drew years earlier. It was believed these post cards inspired the bisque babies or vice versa.
