You are looking at an antique 1 gallon stoneware crock or cream pot. This crock has a beautiful hand-applied cobalt blue tulip type floral decoration fired into the surface. The crock is incised with the maker's name and the location of manufacture, "EVAN R JONES, PITTSTON, PA". The Jones Pottery was located on the outskirts of Pittston, PA in the approximate years of 1870 to 1900. Evan R. Jones and Evan B. Jones operated the pottery. It is not clear what their relation was wheather father and son, cousins, etc., but with the first name being the same, they were most likely not brothers. This wonderful original piece of country art and history measures 8" high, 8" wide across and 5" across the bottom. T is no capacity either incised or painted into the glaze, but it holds 1 gallon of liquid. It has applied "ear-shaped" handles with a rounded upper edge which has a straight horizontal edge. T are a couple of condition issues with this crock, the most serious of which is a 4-1/2" long crack which starts at the top edgeand runs down just to the left of the floral decorration. T is a small (about 1/4" in diameter) surface "spall" or "pop" in the blue floral decoration which probably occurred in the original firing due to a little moisture remaining in the clay.
