The Title of this Book is "The Lays of Ancient Rome" by Lord Macaulay and it is a collection of historical accountings and poems about important events in ancient Rome. A great classic, still in print today and this This edition was published in England about 1872. However, this auction is really for the collector of fine bindings. Absolutely gorgeous tooled gilt decoration over dark green morocco leather and with deep red marbled endpapers, as shown. Appears to have been some type of academic prize (see design on the back of the book). Bishop's motto and mitre on the cover, as shown. Overall, just a superb beautiful example of nineteenth century bookbinder's art. Excellent condition, as the pics show. T is minor edgware and corner wear to the binding and t is an inscription (in Latin) in handsome 19th century script on one of the front free endpapers. Otherwise, nothing to complain about on careful and honest inspection. No warpage, loose pages, missing pages, stains, discolorations, etc. The pics are very honest and show the condition well and you will not be disappointed in the condition of this book. Measures about 7" x 5.5" and about 1.5" thick. NO RESERVE and a very low start and the pics tell the rest of the story.
